3 Practical Ways to Be More Mindful Today

Often we hear the word mindfulness and we assume it means meditation, breathwork, sitting still for hours.

The truth is that mindfulness can be whatever we need it to be, as long as it helps us to stop getting caught up in daily life and to enhance our overall wellbeing.

So what can we do to incorporate mindfulness into our daily lives? Here’s 3 practical things you can start with:

1. Journaling

Whilst this might not be your cup of tea at first, journaling can be a very effective way to relieve stress and release tension from the mind.

Simply writing down any emotions from the day, anything that’s happened that might have caused distress or you don’t feel comfortable talking out loud about can really help relieve the mind. Try these ideas as a place to start:

  • 3 positives things that have happened during your day

  • 3 negative things that you want to acknowledge

  • something you want to take forward into tomorrow (perhaps a reflection on a situation form today)

2. Focused task rather than multi-task

Too often we are rushing around and trying to do everything at once, instead try focusing on one task at a time.

If you are eating lunch, switch off your laptop, try not to look at your phone - simply focus on eating your meal - how it tastes, smells etc.

Simply taking time to do one task properly can make a big difference!

3. Start the day with intention

When you get up in the morning, before you check your phone or switch on the TV, try setting an intention for the day.

This is a really simple thing to do and it can help to create a positive mindset for the day going forward which will have a big impact on how you approach each task

Some examples could be:

  • “Today I will try and stay calm under pressure”

  • “I will take 10 minutes of time for myself”

  • “I won’t feel guilty for taking a break when needed”

  • “I will show up with 100% effort”

  • “I will show kindness towards others”

So, mindfulness takes it’s form in a number of different ways, the main thing is that you find what works for you which sometimes means trying a few different techniques to see what fits.

Often this takes time. so don’t feel discouraged if you struggle at first, it won’t happen overnight!
