Reasons To Vary Your Rep Range

Do you ever feel like week on week you are doing exactly the same exercises? Feel like you may be hitting a plateau with your training?

Varying reps can be one way to progress your workouts and develop strength - here’s some reasons why…

  1. Developing Strength and Muscle

In order to enhance your training, using a variety of rep ranges can help build and develop muscles - here’s a basic guide for reference:

  • Low Reps (8 or less) with High Weight increases strength and muscle growth

  • Middle rep ranges (8 - 12) is considered “hypertrophy” training or “bulking” under the right circumstances, but it also helps build explosive power and burn through extra calories

  • High Reps (15 or more) with Low Weight can aid endurance and help build the bodies ability to sustain movements and exercise

2. Enhancing Technique

Sometimes focusing on a lower rep range with greater focus on positioning can be good for improving technique. A good example of this is a deadlift - a more advanced strength training exercises where it is essential to be in the correct position so using a lower rep range means you can really concentrate on each rep being accurate.

3. Avoiding Plateaus

Sometimes it’s good for us to switch up our training to stop the body hitting a plateau. When working on your overall health and fitness, if you are always doing the same exercises with the same reps, you won’t be challenging to body to grow and strengthen.

This doesn’t mean you have to completely change your training programme, just make sure you regularly review your progress to make sure the ranges you are using are matching your goals.
