What To Do The First Time You Go To The Gym

We’ve all been there - your first visit to the gym, it feels intimidating, everyone looks like they know what they’re doing and you probably want to hide in the corner!

The good news is, this feeling won’t last! It’s always nervous taking the first step towards a new fitness regime but we’ve got all the tips for your first visit to the gym…

People are friendlier than you might think at first glance!

When you first go into the gym people can look a little intimidating, they might look unfriendly but usually it’s just them concentrating on their exercise and 99% of the time people will be more than happy to say hello and chat!

Don’t be afraid to ask someone for help if you’re unsure something, they won’t bite and if they don’t know the answer they will almost definitely help find you someone who does.

Stick to what you feel comfortable with

The first visit to the gym is a big step and it’s completely normal to feel unsure about what to do. We recommend booking an induction before your first solo session so you are familiar with the equipment.

During your first session, simply stick to what you feel comfortable with, even if you walk on the treadmill for the whole session it doesn’t matter! The key thing is that you are there and making the effort so take your time to get comfortable with your surroundings and don’t put any pressure on yourself.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

If you are unsure about something, don’t be afraid to ask for help. People worry that they will look stupid for asking questions but in reality it’s a great sign that you ant to make sure you are doing things correctly!

The staff at the gym are there to help you so make use of them!

Congratulate Yourself!

Whatever you do during that first session, tell yourself well done! The fact is that your first solo gym session is a big achievement and probably something you’ve been very nervous about, so it’s important to remind yourself that you’ve done well.
