3 Things To Avoid Doing In January

Back to work, back to school and back to our daily routines! It’s always hard to adjust back after Christmas and there is the temptation to make drastic changes in the New Year.

We want to highlight 3 things that should be avoided in January and what to do instead…

  1. Drastically Overhauling Your Diet

We understand the need to get back on track after December, HOWEVER, it’s important to avoid making huge changes to your diet out of nowhere.

Often people take drastic action such as cutting out all carbs or fasting for days at a time. This can have negative effects on the body and often do more harm than goof, it’s also not a sustainable approach.

Instead focus on small steps such as reducing the sugar, alcohol and saturated fats and focusing on eating regular, nutritious meals to fuel your body.

2. Overdoing It In The Gym

So often we see people go full pelt with exercise in the new year, often training every day of the week or even multiple times a day. Whilst we encourage regular training, it’s important to ease back in gently when returning to exercise to avoid injury and prevent over ache in the muscles.

Try to take at least 2 rest days per week as you start back and listen to your body. If you are feeling really achy, opt for a stretch session instead of the weights, or if you are struggling with running, go for a walk instead - all exercise is good exercise!

3. Setting challenges too soon

We love a good challenge as much as the next person, but there is something to be said for waiting a few days before committing to something. You can get carried away in the new year but it’s always essential to be realistic.

For example, signing up for a marathon in the first week of January is very exciting, but have you considered if you have the time and capacity to train? If you struggle with knee pain or don’t run regularly - do you even enjoy running?

We suggest a 3 day rule:

Day 1: Hear the challenge

Day 2: Assess the requirements - can you commit? Do you have time? Do you enjoy what it involves?

Day 3: Make your final assessment and decide whether to take it on.
