Exercises To Aid Golfers
If your preferred choice of exercise is to get out on the golf course, you may be looking for ways to improve your technique, avoid tightness in the muscles and feel good on every round.
We’ve got some simple key movements and exercises that can really enhance your game and help you to avoid building up muscle tension when you play…
Make time for mobility
Whether you are a keen golfer already, or you are new to playing, mobility is a key area that needs to be worked on to help your body perform well. Golf involves a lot of rotation through the hips, back and shoulders so here are some key movements to practice before, during and after you play:
- Thoracic twists
- Overhead extensions using a resistance band
- Opening and closing the gate
- Standing roll downs
- Cat/cow
These are all very simple movements that you can add into your day and will help to loosen the muscles that build up tension during golf
Joint Strength Is Key
Lots of golfers struggle with shoulders, wrists and elbows as you put a lot of work through the upper body joints. We would encourage all golfers to add in some simple strength exercises to help develop strength in these areas such as:
- Shoulder press
- Bicep curls
- Lateral pull downs
You can also include stretches to help practise placing pressure through the wrists such as:
- Downward facing dog
- Thread the needle stretch
- Cat/Cow
- Four point extensions
3. Don’t forgo flexibility
As a golfer, flexibility is key to ensuring that you can increase your range of motion without twisting tightly into the back and hips.
Our advice is to include 10-15 minutes of good stretching each day to help keep the body loose. You could do this by attending a class, by using a quick yoga video on YouTube or by getting a stretch programme created for you by a trainer.
This is a simple and easy way to ensure that you stop the muscles building up tightness in the lower back, hips and shoulders.
