Key Exercises For Tennis Players

With the Wimbledon Championships commencing today, if you’re already a regular tennis player, or you’re keen to try something new, we’ve put together some key exercises that are useful for improving your game and technique…

  1. Joint Strengthening

As your joints can take a lot of impact during a tennis match, it’s essential that you are including strength exercises to help the joints cope with this. We recommend not only using weights at the gym, but also including bodyweight exercises that will help you focus more on alignment and posture:

  • Single leg squats - strengthens knees, ankles and hips

  • single leg hip abductions (using a cable or resistance band) - strengthens hips

  • Lunges (reverse/walking/forwards/static) - strengthens knees, ankles, glutes, hips

  • Goblet squats - strengthens knees, hips, lower back

  • RDL’s - strengthens hips and lower back

  1. Plyometric training

This is a training style we use when we want the body to get used to high impact sports - when you play tennis you can often be landing hard on the feet which sends impact through the body and can potentially cause injury if your body is not used to this.

We recommend including these exercises somewhere in your weekly training plan:

    • Box Jumps

    • Jump Squats

    • Broad Jumps

    • Skipping

  1. Cardio Drills

There’s no doubt about it, tennis can really get your heart rate up! Matches can be long and intense and it’s important that you get used to playing at a higher intensity to manage your fatigue.

Try adding in some of these cardio drills to your training to practice:

    • Side Gallops

    • Shuttle Runs

    • Jumping Jacks

    • Jogging

Just by adding in some of these additional exercises to your weekly training, you will help the body to improve strength, stamina and agility!
