How To Adjust Exercise During A Heatwave
If you are struggling with lower energy levels due to the high temperatures - you are not alone!
The levels of heat we are currently experiencing make it very difficult to manage your exercise and there are certain adaptations we recommend to keep yourself well…
Lower The Intensity Of Your Session
During a heatwave, we recommend lowering the intensity of your session for several reasons:
It will help stop your body from overheating
It will prevent blood pressure lowering / feeling light headed
It will help you to maintain energy for longer
Your recovery will be better
Sometimes we have to accept that exercise is harder in extreme conditions and we need to adapt to that in order to continue. If we over push ourselves during the heat, we risk not being able to workout at all for a few days.
Adjust The Time Of Your Session
We know that often you are restricted to working out at certain times due to various commitments. However, during extreme heat we highly reccomend adjsuting the time of your sessions to avoid peak temparatures.
If you can get up earlier and workout in the cooler mornings, or shift your evening committments to work out after the temparature has dropped, you will notice that things feel slightly easier than exercising at midday.
Change The Style Of Session You Do
There is a lot to be said for adjusting the type of workout you do during hotter weather.
For example: If you were planning to do a 40 minute interval run workout, you may like to opt for a 30-40 min easy run if you are struggling to maintain energy.
You could also opt to focus more on the slower side of exercise during a heatwave, such as yoga or pilates where you can work on your mobility and flexibility.
Equally, in the gym, opting for a shorter, low impact session with more rest breaks will help you maintain your strength training without feeling so fatigued.
