Super foods: What are they and should I be consuming them?

You may well have heard about so called ‘super foods’ that are designed to boost our health - but what exactly are they?

We’re delving into what exactly super foods are and where we should be looking to include them in our daily diet

What are Super foods?

Super food is a term used to describe foods that are supposedly nutrient dense and could provide exceptional health benefits due to their high level of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Whilst super food is not a medically recognised term and m any experts will dispute the term as no food has magical properties , it often refers to foods that ar natural and thought to be disease preventing.

Which foods are defined as super foods?

Super foods are often considred to be foods high in vitamisn and antioxidants, some examples inclduing:

  • Berries

  • Nuts and Seeds

  • Leafy greens such as kale and chard

  • Healthy fats such as avocados

Super foods would be considered to be natural and unprocessed foods so can provide high health benefits and are driven by the desire to use food and medicine to help improve our health.

Should I be trying to include super foods in my diet?

As we’ve explained above, super foods are a branding term and are not a medically recognised term so when looking at diet - it’s important to remember that you won’t be able to search for them specifically.

We recommend aiming to eat a balanced daily diet which includes a variety of food groups and types. The foods listed above, whilst branded as superfoods are still excellent to include in your diet as we should aim to consume foods high in vitamins and anti-oxidants.

To summarise, super foods are foods that are deemed to be nutrient dense, high in vitamins and minerals and may provide stronger health benefits although this is not a medically recognized term.

Including these types of foods in your diet can help to maintain a balanced daily diet that can help increase out health and wellbeing.
