Nervous About The Gym? Here’s Our Advice!

It’s completely normal to be nervous about going to the gym, whether it’s your first time or even if you’ve just had a bit of a break.

So here are some key bits of advice for those of you feeling anxious…

Take It Easy

Whatever the circumstances, making your first session in the gym an easy workout will take the pressure off. Even if you’ve been training in the past, sometimes the anxiety can get the better of us and it’s much easier to do something low key, where we feel more confident rather than placing pressure on ourselves to go in heavy.

Go With A Friend

If you’re feeling nervous about the gym, one of the best things to do is to go with someone. This will instantly make you feel more at ease and if you’re new to the gym then they can help to show you the ropes.

Book An Induction or PT Session

If you are new to the gym, we highly recommend booking an induction so that someone can explain different exercises to you and help you to get familiar with the equipment. If you’re returning to exercise after a break, booking a one off session with a personal trainer can help to get you back on track. Both of these options will help provide accountability too, helping you to avoid backing out at the last minute!

Don’t feel pressured to go!

The gym can be a great environment and is often a really supportive space as everyone is ultimaltey working towards the same thing - to get fitter and healthier! However, if you do feel really nerovus, remember that there is no pressure for you to go to the gym - it’s not for everyone and you can always try other ways to keep active. Some things we recommend are:

  • At home workouts

  • Classes

  • Outdoor fitness such as walking / running / cycling

  • Fitness events such as parkrun/parkyoga

These are all good ways to keep active and don’t require you to step foot in the gym!
