What to do when you hit the wall at the gym

We’ve all been there - when you can’t think of anything you’d rather do less than go to the gym. When working out just feels like another chore - this is normal and more common than people realise!

However, if we want to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, it’s important to have a strategy for when this happens so that you don’t give up all together.

Give the gym a miss for a few days

This sounds wrong as surely we should push through and make ourselves train? Actually, when you are feeling like you’ve hit a wall, sometimes forcing yourself to train in the gym can lead you into a negative mindset and make things worse.

Instead, we recommend taking a few days off from the gym, it could be that your mind and body need a break from training and a chnace to reset - so give into it and have some time off to re-balance.

Try something new

Part of the reason that you could be hitting a plateau is that you are bored of your routine. If this is the case, try doing something completetly different to your normal workout - go for a walk, try a class, just something different to give your brain a boost.

It’s important to have variety in our weekly workouts to keep the body and brain stimulated.

Not seeing the progress you would like? Review your programme

Often we can hit a negative spell in our training because we are not seeing the results that we were expecting. This could be happening for many reasons so it’s important to evaluate your training programme regularly and check that you are using the right weights and reps to be achieving your targets

Are you fatigued, stresses, anxious?

It’s important to note than mental factors can affect our training as much as physical ones. If we are lacking in sleep, feeling particularly stressed or in a period of higher anxiety - it can affect out attitude towards exercise as our energy levels may be lower.

If you feel this is the case, take a few days to let your mind and body rest, our mental wellbeing is just as important as our physical wellbeing!
